“I have the best office in the world.”
Bryan Hickman’s determination to steer clear from a typical job has led him around the world and up the ranks at Heavenly Mountain Resort. As the current Snow Surfaces Manager, he takes every opportunity to get out of his office and out on to the mountain to oversee grooming, snowmaking, terrain parks and summer trail operations. This Tahoe native is also incredible active in Epic Promise, Vail Resorts commitment to zero net emissions by 2030, zero waste to landfill by 2030 and zero net operating impact to forests and habitat.
Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Bryan Hickman!
Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?
After graduating from UC Davis I could not bring myself to get a “real” job so I got a job at Heavenly running snowcats so that I could work at night and ski during the day. I have worked up the ranks and across the world, from Beaver Creek to New Zealand to Russia. I have been in my current role as Snow Surfaces Manager, overseeing Grooming, Snowmaking, Terrain Parks and Summer Trail Operations for 3 years now.
At the Age of 18 I received my US Coast Guard Master License and have worked as a Captain on some of Tahoe’s most notable boats including the Tahoe Queen, MS Dixie II and the Tahoe Star.
What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?
Every year it has got to be opening day of the Mountain for the winter season. There are so many people working so hard to make it happen. From the Maintenance crews getting all the equipment ready, to the snowmakers making all that snow, to the groomers putting out the finished product, it is an awesome team to be a part of and seeing all the happy people on that first day is why we do what we do.
A close second is closing day when we can reflect on a great season, take a breath and start planning for the next one.
Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?
“Make it hard to spot the General by working like a soldier”. I’m definitely not afraid to go out and get my hands dirty. I will often be found in a snowcat, making snow or in a ditch during the summer. I have a hard time spending a lot of time in the office with the Mountain right outside my door.
Who is your role model?
My Parents, Lynn & Bob, first and foremost. For all of their support over the years. They instilled a strong work ethic in both my sister and me that has led to our successes today.
Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?
Well, I didn’t have much choice, I was born and raised here. Growing up here it becomes harder and harder to want to leave. I have the best office in the world.
Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?
As are many Heavenly employees, I am active in Epic Promise, Vails commitment to our community and environment. From community cleanups to committees that work to reduce our energy usage and waste to landfill, we work to support our local communities for a bright, sustainable future.
I also serve as a Director and Treasurer for the Summit Village Homeowners Association up at the top of Kingsbury.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Spend time in the yard or walking around the neighborhood with the dogs.
Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds
Any of the awesome hiking trails around the lake, I especially like the Tahoe Rim Trail up at the top of Kingsbury. Also anytime friends of family are in town I’ve got to take them up the Gondola and for a ride on the Mountain Coaster. The nieces and nephews love it!
