Kelsey Magoon follows the wisdom that “success is a series of small wins.” All of her small wins have added up to a big impact on our South Shore community.

Kelsey serves as the Coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and will be transitioning into a new role with Live Violence Free next month. She also sits on the board for Tahoe Regional Young Professionals, graduated from Leadership Lake Tahoe earlier this year, and is a recent member of the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Kelsey Magoon!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

My work as the Coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition has included being a part of the El Dorado County Opioid Prevention Coalition, working with the South Tahoe Police Department on the Drug Take Back Program, and the South Tahoe City Council Cannabis Subcommittee to ensure youth are represented in the discussion of legalization. I have been educating 6th-grade youth for the past four years during the Drug Store Project and supporting the Club Live and Friday Night Live activities at the Middle and High Schools. However, our grant has come to an end at the end of this month, and I have gained a new position at Live Violence Free as their Prevention and Outreach Educator. I am excited for the new opportunity and can’t wait to begin my next career step!

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

My favorite professional moment this year was attending the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America mid-year conference where I got to travel to Orlando, Florida and had the opportunity to learn new prevention tactics and gain new insights in the fight against addiction.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?

My professional mantra that I try to work by is “success is a series of small wins”. In my day to day work it can be hard to see all the successes and progress we have made in the community, but when I look back at how much has changed since I started my position, I see that I have made a difference.

What was your first job?

My first real job was as a PINK sales representative at Victoria’s Secret in my local mall. It made me appreciate the hard work retailers go through and remember to have patience, especially during the holidays.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

I came to Tahoe planning on just staying for the winter and fell in love with the summers. Four years later and I am still loving the Tahoe lifestyle. I love how many events and activities happen each year and the ability to have so many opportunities to be active outside.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

I currently sit on the board for the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals as their Marketing Director. I was also a participant in the Leadership Lake Tahoe class of 2017-2018, which has inspired me to become more involved in the community. I am also a recent member of the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I really enjoy being outside and enjoying everything Tahoe has to offer, like skiing, hiking, and playing volleyball on the beach with friends. I love all of the live music events during the summer and being able to spend time at the lake.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

I’m a huge fan of the upper deck seating at Freshies restaurant every summer. It’s right by my work and it has one of the best views for lunch! My other favorites include the new Pick 6 restaurant, the Tahoe Pourhouse and the Getaway Café in Meyers.
