“My favorite professional moment in the last year was knowing that Cloud Nine has played an important role and has contributed to so many special moments in our client’s lives. There is nothing that brings me greater joy than seeing a client enjoying their event to the fullest and knowing that we helped make that possible.”

Lindsay Townsend, Owner of Cloud Nine Event Company, is the latest honoree of our 40 under 40. Lindsay found her passion in event planning and has turned that passion into a successful and award-winning business. Lindsay is a shining example of a young professional who has proven that hard work and dedication can make your dreams become a reality. Congratulations Lindsay!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I started Cloud Nine Event Company in 2013 after five years working as the Wedding Sales Manager for Lake Tahoe Cruises & Zephyr Cove Resort.  Cloud Nine provides event planning, coordination, and design services for events of all kinds but we specialize in Lake Tahoe weddings.  We service the entire Lake Tahoe basin from South Shore to Truckee and have found that most of our clients love Tahoe just as much as we do.

I personally love that my work combines analytical elements like research and logistics with creative elements like the design. I also get to work with people, often spending up to 18 months planning the biggest celebration of their lives.  I love that eachevent is completely unique and with that comes its own unique set of challenges.  It gives me great satisfaction to overcome those obstacles to put on a beautiful, flawless, memorable day for my clients and their guests alike.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

Well, it is quite an honor to be featured in the Tahoe Chamber’s 40 under 40, so I’ll mark this moment down as one of my faves!  But honestly, 2017 was an incredible year for Cloud Nine.  We won the prestigious “Best Of Tahoe” award and were also honored with the Knot’s “Best Of” award and Wedding Wire’s “Couples Choice” award.  In addition to that, we had our biggest year yet, servicing over 40 weddings and events, which I certainly could not have done without my two amazing associates, Emily Abernathy and Ashley Spangler.

Beyond all that, is knowing that we have played an important role and have contributed to so many special moments in our client’s lives.  There is nothing that brings me greater joy than seeing a client enjoying their event to the fullest and knowing that we helped to make that possible.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you try to live by?

I have “Do What You Love, Love What You Do” written on the wall of my office to remind me how extremely blessed I am to be able to do what I love on a daily basis.  When you love what you do, it is easy to be good at it and I feel so fortunate that I have found my passion in event planning.

What was your first job?

In high school, I was an avid equestrian, so in the summers I taught YMCA kids how to ride and care for horses.  I remember it being very challenging, but that experience coupled with the countless other lessons I learned while riding horses taught me a lot about responsibility, patience, work ethic, and tenacity.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

In the winter of 2006, I moved from Los Angeles to Tahoe with the sole intention of snowboarding and living “the mountain life” for 6 months.  On my first night in town, I met the man who later became my husband and I never looked back.  I would never have predicted I would end up living in Tahoe, but I feel so blessed that this is the course my life has taken.  Being a part of this close-knit community has taught me to embrace a slower pace of life, to enjoy the moment, to get outdoors, and to make your life an everyday adventure.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

As a mother and a business owner, the hardest part for me is finding balance.  I have learned to accept that I cannot do everything and that it is often better to say no than to take on too much.  I think that is such an important lesson for all working moms, as one can become easily overwhelmed by all the demands put on us.

So at this time in my life, I am focusing my energy on my two young children and on continuing to grow my business.  I look forward to playing a more active role in the community just as soon as both kids are in school!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I love both skiing and snowboarding (it’s what brought me here over a decade ago!), playing on the beach with my family, traveling, going to concerts, hiking, and drinking wine with friends.

Where is your favorite South Shore stomping ground?

There are too many to name – our little town has so much to offer! But Edgewood Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Aleworx, are definitely top of my list.
