Matthew Wong is already in the profession of helping people, but he refuses to stop there.

As a clinical psychologist at Matthew Wong, PsyD & Mountain Therapy Collaborative, Wong specializes in therapy, assessments, and consultations. Beyond his inspiring daily work with children, adults, and families, this “40 under 40” honoree developed a children’s camp in collaboration with the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to help foster leadership and confidence.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Matthew Wong!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

As a clinical psychologist my responsibilities include the diagnosis and treatment of children, teens, and adults in our community and I specialize in neuropsychological testing of children. I help with a wide range of issues from parental separation/divorce, anxiety, depression, and life stressors. I have established two successful private practice locations and am in the process of developing an interdisciplinary clinic here in South Lake. I am active in the California Psychological Association and recently presented at their state conference. I have also presented nationally with the American Psychological Association. I am a board member of CPA’s Division III which focuses on consulting psychology, and hold a committee position tasked with supporting and developing education opportunities for early career psychologists.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

Helping people grow is the favorite part of my profession. There have been are many small moments along the way.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?

You can’t learn to walk unless you are willing to fall.

What was your first job?

My first job was a data entry clerk for a Cardiopulmonary Unit at Chinese Hospital in SF.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

Tahoe is a tremendously underserved community and I appreciate the opportunity to have a positive impact while also being able to balance a healthy lifestyle. To be able to move seamlessly from talking about very serious matters to walking in the forest helps me stay sane.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

I am in active collaboration with the Boy’s and Girl’s club and we received the Barton Foundation Grant for YELL Camp, which is a kid’s camp my assistant and I developed to help foster social and emotional growth.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Outside of work I have many hobbies that help me stay active. I mountain bike, snowboard, and play basketball. This year I am trying my hand at electrical engineering and I’m learning how to design and build a home solar electric grid.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

I love Freebird for their chai, Keys Café for their breakfast burritos, Lotus Pho for lunch and dinner, and the Powerline Trail for dog walks and a quick bike ride.

Who would YOU nominate for 40 under 40?

I would nominate Andrea Perry, owner of Twine and Dandy Floral Designs. She recently had her 33rd birthday and her business has grown tremendously over the past year since opening.
