“My role model is anyone who lets their dreams guide them.”

Rachel Carlson wears many hats as the owner and operator of the boutique hotel and wedding venue, Black Bear Lodge, on Ski Run Blvd. Together with her husband, Rachel has reinvented the property to not only be the perfect getaway for visitors, but a place for locals as well by hosting community events like wine tastings and movie nights.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Rachel Carlson!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

Like many small business owners, I wear many, many hats.  My biggest accomplishment by far has been reopening the property. We reinvented what a boutique hotel could look like and added new life to Ski Run Blvd.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

My favorite professional moment this last year has been seeing our wedding couples return to visit, some with new babies of their own. Our venue is unique in that our wedding couples stay 3 or 4 days on property so we really get to know each other.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?

“No Ego Amigo.” It’s a new mantra for me and it can apply to many different facets of life – essentially don’t let your ego take control, don’t be afraid to fail, go at your own pace.

Who is your role model?

My role model is anyone who lets their dreams guide them. Passionate people who are unapologetic about doing what they love.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

Tahoe, for me, first is about the physical environment. I love the four seasons, the mountains and the lake. Second, it’s about the community of people. This community is so kind and supportive.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

My biggest passion in the community is supporting small businesses and creating quality of life for our neighborhood. I’m active on the Ski Run Business Improvement District and with other grassroots efforts to bring energy into our communities.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Like most folks in Tahoe, I love to be outside! On the lake in the summer and on the mountain in the winter.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

When I’m not at Black Bear Lodge, you can find me on the lake with my husband and daughter, Lily or skiing at Kirkwood.
