Why Destination Stewardship Matters
Tourism is a cornerstone of the Lake Tahoe economy, supporting small businesses, jobs, and essential public services. At the same time, increased visitation can impact infrastructure, outdoor spaces, and community character. Destination stewardship is about balance; ensuring visitors enjoy everything Tahoe and Truckee have to offer while helping preserve the environment, culture, and lifestyle that make these mountain towns special.
One of the most effective ways to influence visitor behavior is through personal interaction. A simple conversation at a hotel front desk, retail counter, trailhead, ski resort, or restaurant can shape how someone experiences Tahoe. When visitors understand local values, history, and outdoor ethics, they are far more likely to respect them.
As Nettie Pardue, Managing Director of the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council, explains, “Our region’s best advocates have always been those who live and work in our community. If we work together to teach visitors about the culture of our mountain towns, they’re more likely to embrace the pace of the Tahoe lifestyle when they’re here, feel more connected to our communities, and want to help take care of them.”
What You’ll Learn
The self-paced Destination Champion training is designed for anyone who interacts with visitors, hospitality professionals, retail teams, recreation providers, frontline employees, volunteers, and community members alike.
Through interactive modules, participants gain a deeper understanding of North Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe, and Truckee, including the cultural heritage of the Washoe people. The program provides practical tools for positive visitor engagement, guidance for navigating challenging situations, and clear explanations of sustainable tourism principles. Participants also learn best practices for outdoor stewardship, responsible recreation, and protecting Lake Tahoe’s natural environment.
The goal is to develop confident, knowledgeable ambassadors who help visitors connect meaningfully with the Tahoe lifestyle while reinforcing respect for the land and community.
A Collaborative Effort Across Tahoe & Truckee
The Destination Champion platform was developed in partnership with Learn Tourism, a nonprofit academy that has supported more than 60 destinations nationwide with engaging, results-driven education programs. Bringing this platform to Tahoe and Truckee reflects a shared commitment among local leadership to create a unified approach to visitor education and community care.
By aligning messaging and training across South Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe, and Truckee, this initiative strengthens consistency in how we communicate expectations around sustainable travel, outdoor responsibility, and community values.
Why It Benefits Local Businesses
For businesses in the Lake Tahoe tourism and hospitality sector, Destination Champion enhances customer service, builds employee confidence, and reinforces a culture of stewardship within teams. It signals a commitment to sustainable tourism and responsible visitor engagement, values that increasingly influence traveler decision-making.
For community members, the program deepens understanding of the place we call home and provides practical tools to represent it thoughtfully and respectfully.
