For this month’s CEO message, I want to focus on a topic that might not be what you think of immediately as pertaining to business, but it could certainly have an impact on someone you know.

The No Surprises Act protects consumers from receiving surprise medical bills when they get most emergency services, non-emergency services from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, and services from out-of-network air ambulance providers.

It establishes an independent dispute resolution process for payment disputes between plans and providers. And it also sets up a dispute resolution mechanism for uninsured and self-pay individuals when they receive a medical bill that is substantially greater than the good faith estimate they get from a provider.

The act applies to people enrolled in employer group insurance, individually purchased insurance, and Health Insurance Marketplace (Obamacare) plans. It also applies to uninsured people and those who have insurance but choose to pay out of pocket (self-pay).

The act doesn’t apply to people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, VA Health Care, TRICARE, and Indian Health Services. These programs have their own protections against surprise bills.
