Douglas County Commission Candidates Forum May 9 in Stateline

May 3, 2018 (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev.) – The four candidates for Douglas County Commission will square off at a community forum set for Wednesday evening, May 9, starting at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at the Tahoe Transportation Center, 169 US Highway 50 in Stateline.

Tahoe residents Wesley Rice and Janet Murphy are vying for the District 4 seat that will become open at the end of this year. Current District 4 Commissioner Nancy McDermid will term out at that time. District 2 incumbent Commissioner Steve Thaler is being challenged by John Engels.

Rice is a currently a Deputy Constable with the Douglas County Constable’s office. He previously served in the Sheriff’s Office Reserve Program and spent 15 years as the Sheriff’s Department Senior Boat Patrol Deputy on Lake Tahoe. For the past 25 years, Murphy has been Administrator of the Tahoe Douglas District, a special district on the east shore of Tahoe within Douglas County.

Thaler’s career includes service with the US Marine Corps, nine years as a Douglas County Deputy Sheriff, five years as a Special Investigator with the District Attorney’s office, and 16 years as Director of the China Springs Youth Camp. He is currently County Commission Chair. Engels served as an Artillery Captain during the Vietnam War and as the chief financial officer for a major worldwide company, before settling in the Carson Valley.
