The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets.

Founded in 1994 by a group of committed volunteers, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has become the driving force in animal rescue and adoption for the Truckee region. Earlier this year, HSTT expanded their service into South Lake Tahoe with the goal of restoring low cost and free spay/neuter services.

Welcome to our Tahoe Chamber community, Human Society of Truckee-Tahoe! Learn more about them in the Q&A below.

What type of business do you represent and how long have you been in business?

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter and humane education programs.

Founded in 1994 by a group of committed volunteers, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has become the driving force in animal rescue and adoption for the Truckee/North Lake Tahoe region.

Over time, we have grown from a small grass roots entity to a nationally recognized non-profit organization with eleven employees and hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

January 2019 marked HSTT’s service expansion into South Lake Tahoe, from Glenbrook to Myers. We now provide vital animal welfare services to the entire Lake Tahoe Basin in addition to Truckee and Sierra County.

Our primary goal in South Lake Tahoe was to restore low cost and free spay/neuter services to qualifying community members immediately. Through a partnership with several local veterinarians, these services have been initiated and dozens of community members have utilized the program.

Now that spay/neuter programs are under way, we’re setting our sights on what’s next. Our plans include an expansion of our humane education and pet therapy programs and to build a robust volunteer program.

Tell us more about what products and services your business offers. Is there anything people might not be aware you offer?

COMMUNITY SPAY & NEUTER

We provide low-cost and FREE spay/neuter surgeries to qualified limited-income, full-time residents of Eastern El Dorado County, Eastern Nevada County, Eastern Placer County, Incline Village, Sierra County, or South Lake Tahoe from Glenbrook to Meyers.

Through these programs, local residents who require financial assistance can obtain FREE or low-cost spay or neuter surgeries for their dogs and cats at our public animal shelter, or at participating Veterinary Hospitals.

HUMANE EDUCATION

HSTT operates an active Humane Education program In Truckee and North Lake Tahoe and we are excited to expand to South Lake Tahoe in the future.

Included will be the following programs:

RUFF

HSTT’s Reading Program, RUFF (Read Up For Fun) is designed to build self-esteem in young readers. Trained volunteers bring their dogs into area schools where children will read aloud to the dog.

PET PALS

We provide in-classroom presentations to children preschool-5th grade. Our presentations teach about empathy, kindness and compassion for animals.

PET ASSISTED THERAPY

Through this program, certified HSTT volunteers and their companion animals visit Barton, Tahoe Forest Hospital, local schools and Tahoe Safe Alliance.

PET PANTRY

We help our community feed and care for their pets by providing and distributing free pet food and supplies to families that need it.

PET ADOPTIONS

We do not have plans to operate an animal shelter in South Lake Tahoe. Instead, we will support El Dorado County Animal Services by encouraging people to visit and adopt from their shelter or to visit our Truckee facility.

Tell us about any current/upcoming events, promotions, or unique deals happening at your organization.

We have hired a South Lake Tahoe Program Manager, Mariel Berei, to oversee our south campus. Mariel lives in SLT and is deeply committed to the community. She is very excited to help build our programs and get the word out about HSTT.

We are also looking for affordable office space in the South Lake community so that we can be in the heart of the town.

Why did you choose to join the Tahoe Chamber?

As an organization that supports communities around the lake, HSTT wanted be in touch and involved in the South Lake Tahoe community and joining the Tahoe Chamber is a great way to reach out, be present, and show our commitment.
