One Wild Year: Reflecting on Our First Year at Cascade Kitchens

They say most new restaurants don’t make it past their first year. Now imagine opening not one restaurant, but a home for ten of them — in a mountain town where the seasons swing hard, the workforce is stretched thin, and every square foot comes at a Tahoe premium. That was the bet we made when we opened Cascade Kitchens Food Hall & Bar one year ago.

Twelve months later, we’re still here — and we’re throwing a party about it.

Starting a business anywhere is hard. Starting one in Tahoe adds its own set of challenges: a seasonal economy, a housing market that makes hiring an adventure, and winters that can bury your parking lot and your projections in the same week. We knew all of that going in. What we couldn’t have known was just how much support would show up when we needed it.

To our restaurant partners, who took a chance on a brand-new concept and brought their food, their families, and their dreams into this building: thank you. And to our staff — the bartenders, bussers, and crew who have handled every rush, every curveball, and every “well, that’s never happened before” moment of year one: this place runs because of you. The ups and downs of a first year are real, and you carried us through all of them.

But the biggest thank-you belongs to South Lake Tahoe itself. From day one, our goal was to be more than a food hall — we wanted to be a community gathering place. Watching locals make us their go-to spot, week after week, has been the most rewarding part of this entire year. You show up for trivia. You show up for movie night. You showed up for World Cup matches. You made this vision real.

Many Businesses Under One Roof

One of the things we’re proudest of is what Cascade Kitchens makes possible for other entrepreneurs. Our food hall and commissary kitchen support independent businesses operating under one roof. Chefs and owners who might never have had a path to opening a standalone restaurant in this market. Together, they’ve brought a level of culinary variety to the South Shore that simply didn’t exist here before. When you eat at Cascade Kitchens, you’re not supporting one business. You’re supporting all of them!

A Year of Gathering

We set out to give families and neighbors reasons to come together, and year one delivered:

  • Kids cooking classes that turned our kitchens into classrooms
  • Monthly movie nights for kids so parents could grab a drink and relax
  • Weekly trivia that has developed some genuinely fierce rivalries
  • World Cup games that packed the house

We also believe a gathering place should look like one. Supporting local arts has been part of our identity from the start, and the various murals we’ve supported brings public art right onto our walls – with more to come.

Plates for a Purpose

Perhaps nothing captures what we’re trying to build better than our Plates for a Purpose fundraising series. Over the past year, these events have raised more than $5,000 for organizations doing important work in our community:

  • TAMBA — September 2025 and June 2026
  • Sierra Education Fund — December 2025
  • Lake Tahoe Documentary Film Fest — March 2026
  • Tahoe Parents Nursery School — March 2026
  • High Sierra Softball — April 2026
  • Meyers Elementary PTA — May 2026
  • Leadership Lake Tahoe — June 2026
  • Lake Tahoe Lakers — August 2026

We have more Plates for a Purpose events on the books for this fall, and we’d love to hear from other local organizations interested in partnering with us.

Come Celebrate One Wild Year — September 6

We’re marking our first anniversary the only way we know how: by throwing a party for the whole community. Join us Sunday, September 6 — Labor Day weekend — as we close out the summer and celebrate one wild year.

Here’s a taste of what’s planned:

  • “Best of Cascade” tasting competition — sample signature bites from our restaurants and vote for your favorites
  • Cascade Passport — collect stamps around the venue and enter to win our raffle
  • Signature anniversary cocktails and $5 specials to kick things off
  • Live music, kids activities and a community memory wall all day
  • Cake and a toast at 7:30 PM to celebrate the year and announce the Best of Cascade and raffle winners

To everyone who ate, drank, played, cheered, painted, fundraised, and gathered with us this year: thank you. Come raise a glass with us on September 6 — and let’s make year two even wilder.
