Due to a delay in receiving needed supplies, the Caltrans contractor working on the US 50 Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct project will be moving their expected full road closure date.

Caltrans told the South Lake Tahoe City Council in their meeting yesterday that it is looking more like mid-October for their closing road between the lake and Sacramento for up to 14 days. They explained that the actual closure date is still not confirmed.

The project will be to work on a new section of bridge that supports that roadway near the summit. The existing bridge was built in 1939 and does not meet current seismic and safety standards. A signed detour will be in place during the full closure. Motorists can use State Route 49 from Placerville to Jackson, then State Route 88 to the beautiful Hope Valley, then on State 89 over Luther Pass into South Lake Tahoe. Local residents and businesses will be issued passes to use Johnson Pass Road as a local detour during the closure. More information about these local passes will be available at a community meeting set for Thursday evening, September 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the California Conservancy Corps Tahoe Center, 1949 Apache Avenue in Meyers.
