40 under 40: Felicity Monsees, The Center for Orthopedics & Wellness at Barton

One of Felicity Monsees personal mantras is to try to spread support and care for everyone she meets. That’s what makes her a perfect fit for her position as a Performance Therapy Tech at the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness.

Felicity has lived in the South Shore for nearly two years, deciding to move here from Chico, Calif., after a 120-degree day! She’s involved in Tahoe Regional Young Professionals and volunteers for a variety of community events, like Sample the Sierra.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Felicity Monsees.

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I joined the team at The Center for Orthopedics & Wellness at Barton as a Performance Therapy Tech last May after enjoying about nine months of working for a private practice. I had the honor of joining the team moving over to the brand new Robert Maloff Center this Spring/ Summer.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

Definitely the opening of the new Center for Orthopedics and Wellness in the Robert Maloff Center. It’s so exciting having so many state-of-the-art tools (that I often refer to as toys) to get and use to keep and help people get better! I was like a kid on Christmas morning!

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?

Probably more personal than professional, but I definitely carry it with me every day at work, too… Love Greatly! I just want every person I meet to know and feel that I genuinely care for them and love them. We need all the love we can get in this world and this life. We won’t get through it alone—nor should we!

What was your first job?

My very first job was a smoothie shop when I was in high school, but my first big-kid job was when I was 19 in Chico, Calif. I was hired on by my friend’s startup company Build.com (then Improvement Direct.) It was then purchased by Ferguson/Wolseley North America. I loved that opportunity and the years I got to see the small startup turn into a large successful business and one of the largest employers in our town.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

I had been away from Chico for a few years and moved back for a summer. I quickly remembered one 120-degree day why I couldn’t hang. When it “cooled” to 90 that night—I started applying to mountain town Rehab jobs everywhere! I got a call for a job in Tahoe and came down to interview immediately. The moment I set eyes on the lake that September day, I knew. No matter the outcome of my interview, I was home. Thankfully, I got the job and moved officially the next month.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

I’m active with Tahoe Regional Young Professionals. I actually joined the marketing committee the night I signed my lease in town. The rest has pretty much been history. I am now on the board of directors and work directly with our membership committee, trying to improve the member experience and benefits. I also volunteer for many other events throughout the year. If it involves making life here better, I’m always down to help. I fully intend to spend the rest of my days in South Lake.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Hmm… that’s tough! I love anything that takes me outside. I really love being in the water. Hands down though, I’d have to say (my favorite thing is) experiencing and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. I can’t turn down a good sunset or sunrise.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

Honestly, anywhere there are dogs! My friends joke that if you lose me, just look for dogs. Clearly, that includes Kiva Beach, South Lake Brewing Company, and Outpost Brewing Co. (their Mac n cheese is to die for). I’m also addicted to coffee and burritos! So Verde is one of my favorites. For that same reason, I cannot wait for Blue Granite Climbing to open. Refuge Coffee owns the cafe in the gym and rumor has it there will be burritos! The coffee is amazing too—tastes like nothing I’ve tried before! I’m sure there’s something else I’m missing, too.
