“Stay Young. I believe you have to keep your youth. It keeps you curious, faithful, humble and hopeful. So far doing these things have made life very adventurous and rewarding.”

Steve Hemphill, Director of Marketing and Sales ofSierra-at-Tahoe, is the latest honoree of our 40 under 40. Steve is passionate about his endeavors and offers a think-outside-the-box approach to marketing which is what makes Sierra-at-Tahoe a favorite amongst locals and visitors. Congratulations Steve!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I’m honored to lead the Sierra-at-Tahoe Marketing and Sales department where I’m responsible for the resorts marketing strategies, sales initiatives, brand direction, public relations activities, and overall storytelling both externally and internally. At Sierra, we’re proud of who we are and where we sit in the market and remain focused on growing market share amongst the other Lake Tahoe resorts. Since returning as the Director of Marketing and Sales, it’s been extremely rewarding to see the new markets that have taken to skiing and snowboarding.

We’re proud to be the mountain that these new markets come for their first experience.  Our resort continues to grow in diversity and it’s great to see our efforts in the ethnic markets paying off.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

In the last year, I’m extremely proud of the team we’ve built in the Sierra-at-Tahoe Marketing and Sales department. I’ve surrounded myself with wildly intelligent, passionate and talented people. It’s an honor to come to work each day and work alongside them. At a resort Sierra’s size, it truly is a team effort and our entire team does an amazing job helping tell the Sierra story and stand out in a crowded marketplace. They’re all incredible.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you try to live by?

Stay Young. I believe you have to keep your youth. It keeps you curious, faithful, humble and hopeful. So far doing these things have made life very adventurous and rewarding.

What was your first job?

I went to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder and throughout college, I was a ski boot fitter. As a ski enthusiast at the time, it was the dream job and proved to be an incredible place to connect with other ski industry professionals and get my foot in the door. It was also an amazing experience that taught me first-hand about customer experience, operating a small business and balancing work and life.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

It’s the ultimate work, life balance. It seems many successful people in Lake Tahoe have a similar trait. They all work hard but play harder. After a long day’s work, it’s hard to beat a Tahoe sunset while running, biking, or skiing.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

I currently sit on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) Marketing Advisory Committee. It’s an honor to sit on the committee with another 40 under 40 awardee, Dan Keenan, and other brilliant marketing minds in Lake Tahoe. The LTVA does an amazing job promoting the destination and all the activities that the South Shore has to offer.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I’m a big fan of all the world-class actives Lake Tahoe has to offer. I love skiing, usually, at Sierra-at-Tahoe, a good trail run or mountain bike ride, spending time on the lake, or just enjoying some time outside.

Where is your favorite South Shore stomping ground?

Besides Sierra-at-Tahoe, I love the serenity of Hope Valley. It’s pushing the boundaries of the South Shore but, the adventures and activities beyond Luther Pass are pretty amazing, and not to mention the views are spectacular.
