South Tahoe Public Utility District provides reliable and safe water, wastewater collection and treatment, and recycled water for our community. We are the largest water provider in South Lake Tahoe with 14,000 water connections. All of the drinking water the District provides is sourced from groundwater. The District relies on 13 wells, 253 miles of waterline, 31 pressure zones, 16 booster stations, and 19 storage tanks to provide delicious Tahoe tap. Every drop of water that flows down the drain into the sewer system on the California side of South Lake Tahoe is pumped to the wastewater treatment plant to be treated. This means 17,800 sewer connections across town feed into 312 miles of gravity sewer lines and 41 pump stations transport wastewater to the treatment plant located in the center of town, next to Lake Tahoe Community College. Once cleaned, the recycled water is pumped 26 miles up and over Luther Pass to Alpine County where it is used by farmers for agricultural irrigation. In addition to recycling 100% of the wastewater, the District also recycles 100% of its biosolids as fertilizer for agricultural land in Douglas County, NV. To ensure reliable service, the District works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
