I am one of many and I make good choices | Empowering teens against youth vaping

81% of youth who vape said they do so to decrease stress, anxiety, or depression (Truth Initiative). It is more important than ever that we teach coping skills and guide youth to lead healthier lives. What type of business do you represent and how long have you been in business?

Partnership Douglas County is the local non-profit Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. Partnership was founded in 1992 and formalized in June 1993. This summer we are celebrating our 30th year in service.

Tell us more about what products and services your business offers. Is there anything people might not be aware you offer?

Partnership Douglas County (PDC) promotes a healthy community through education and resource connection. Our “bread and butter” is youth prevention education and resource connection. Through our youth group, Empowering YOUth, we provide substance use and mental health education programs in our schools. Through our Hispanic outreach we offer ESL classes, mindfulness, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs education and a women’s group called Fuerza Latina. Across the board PDC provides community education trainings on topics including Naloxone, Up and Coming Drug Trends, and other hot-topics. PDC manages the Mobile Outreach Safety Team through the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and provides grants to other local non-profits.

Tell us about any current/upcoming events, promotions, or unique deals happening at your organization.

We just concluded our annual Nevada Statewide Youth Legislative Day where we brough 19 youth across the state to learn about our legislator, have a chance to meet with their representatives and advocate for topics they are passionate about. PDC staff participated in The Drug Store project and provided education to our youth on Gateway Drugs.

On April 22nd Partnership Douglas County along with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the Rx Take Back Day from 10-2pm at three locations this year.

On May 13th PDC and Suicide Prevention Network are hosting the second “Prevention Starts Here” Walk for Mental Health Awareness Month. This event will start at Jakes Wetland in Minden, Nv and end at the Seeman Ranch Park. We would like to invite our community to join us for this great cause and to learn more about the resources offered in our beautiful county.

At the end of July Partnership will be taking youth to the Mountains of Possibilities Youth Summit in Reno! Last year over 50 youth across the state attended this camp down in Vegas and came away with life skills, education on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and skills to make them successful as teens and young leaders in our community!
