“I feel privileged that my job gives me the chance to protect and preserve this special place so my kids and their kids can enjoy it too.”

Chris is the Communications Manager for the League to Save Lake Tahoe. He is a Rhodes Scholar earning master’s degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Social Anthropology. He cares deeply for the environment, his community, and Tahoe!

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Chris Joseph!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I am responsible for managing the League’s internal and external communications, including its messaging, online presence (website and social media), earned media relations, paid advertising, collateral materials design, and video production. Together with a communications associate and other colleagues who pitch in, we keep a lot of balls in the air. Last year’s challenging pandemic environment led to some notable accomplishments, including orchestrating a shift from in-person engagement to a range of virtual activities, lessons and events. Similarly, the League helped produce the first-ever virtual Lake Tahoe Summit, filmed at the Thunderbird Lodge with Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada. Finally, one of the League’s keystone events – our annual benefit fashion show – moved to an online format last year, which required extensive planning and turned out to be quite a success.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

Without a doubt, my favorite moment was interviewing more than a half dozen of Tahoe’s frontline workers – including first responders, hospitality workers and community group leaders – for a video that was included in the program for the 24th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit. It was a privilege to capture and share the stories of the humble people who put themselves in harm’s way to keep Tahoe safe and open during the pandemic.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you try to live by?

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. Poise and a quiet mind are things I constantly strive to achieve.

Who is your role model?

My parents turned humble beginnings into wonderful lives for our family. Their work ethic, resilience and selflessness gave me a model I strive to follow in my own life.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

I’ve never experienced a place so unique and so endowed with natural beauty, yet with so much freedom for its residents and visitors to explore and enjoy. That liberty we have is a wonderful gift and a weighty responsibility. I feel privileged that my job gives me the chance to protect and preserve this special place so my kids and their kids can enjoy it too.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

a. When I’m not working at or photographing the League’s community events, I volunteer my time there.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Exploring Tahoe’s endless trails with my wife.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

Exploring Tahoe’s endless trails with my wife.
