“When you can see the growth, and more importantly the support from the community and smiles on people’s faces while they are visiting your space…that’s the real win.”

Nate Riffle is the Owner/Partner of The Hangar Taproom and Bottle Shop, where he and his partner created Tahoe’s largest outdoor beer garden. The Hangar has seen incredible growth since its grand opening in 2018 and continues to emerge as a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Nate Riffle!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I do a little bit of everything. Social Media, graphic design, ordering, staffing, but it’s a team effort. I have a lot of support from my partner and we have great staff that make things easy.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

Winning best new business was definitely up there. I think, just seeing the growth of the business, that we knew was going to be something, finally happen. We have had our fair share of challenges, as any new business does. But, when you can see the growth, and more importantly the support from the community and smiles on people’s faces while they are visiting your space…that’s the real win.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you live by?

Mantra, I don’t know if it’s that deep. Ha. Work hard, treat people fairly and believe in yourself. I was never handed anything, I’ve had to work for everything and there is no substitute for hard work to build towards your goals and success. Whatever success looks like for you.

Who is your role model?

My family. My mom was/is a strong influence in my life. Instilling a strong moral compass, teaching us to appreciate what we have, to work hard and good things will happen. My Dad (stepfather…who adopted myself and my siblings when we were younger), for stepping in and showing us unconditional love and support, no matter what. My brother and sisters, who have grown into strong adults, who own businesses, have families and inspire me to be better.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

Tahoe is a special place, anyone that spends time here can relate to that. My wife grew up here, and if we could figure it out to make the move here full-time we’d definitely try. It’s a place I’d want to raise children. My partner (Jerry Seagreaves) and I found a niche that needed to be filled. So we went for it. All in.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

As it currently stands, at this moment in time while I type. No. With all that has happened in the past few months, our focus has been on making it through these crazy social and economic times while doing the best we can for our staff/family. We have and will continue to support local organizations that we believe in. TAMBA is one that resonates with my partner and I….I also like to watch what Chris McNamara, Scott Fair and Justin Watzka are involved with. Young people with progressive ideas for this town. I can get behind that.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I like being outside. Riding bikes has always been a big part of my life, it’s always helped with stress and a sense of self. Now trying to get out on the lake as much as possible. There is something really special about being out there. Nothing quite clears your head like being by or in that water… oh, and making a good cocktail. That never hurts either.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

I spend most of my time at our business but when I have a chance to venture out… In no particular order : Divided Sky makes a damn good drink (get something with fresh grapefruit juice), Off the Hook Sushi, Verdé, Sierra-at-Tahoe when the season is right, anywhere outside I can be with my wife and our dog…and if the time is right, you best believe I’ll be seeing Chuy at Sombreros (in Meyers) for some asada fries. If you know, you know…if not take this advice and go get some.
