Changes in the climate and environment are contributing to an increased risk of wildfires. NV Energy is implementing a number of measures in response to these changes to help protect our customers and environment from wildfires and extreme weather, including Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM). During a PSOM event, NV Energy will shut off power in extreme fire-risk areas, including Lake Tahoe, when certain environmental conditions are met. This helps prevent power lines and other equipment from causing a wildfire. NV Energy is already working closely with local emergency agencies to implement PSOM, and this will be done only as a last resort.

What We Are Monitoring
No one factor causes a PSOM event. We will monitor closely various dynamics to determine if and when power should be shut off for safety. These include weather conditions, vegetation levels that can be used as fuel for a fire, field observations and information from first responders.

Notifications
We have a robust outreach plan in place to ensure customers have all of the information they need before, during and after a PSOM event. We will notify impacted customers directly at least 48 hours in advance, if possible, before shutting off power. We will keep customers informed through advance notifications and ongoing updates until power has been restored. This will be done directly via phone and MyAccount alerts, and through our social media channels, nvenergy.com and local news.

Preparation
We encourage you to plan ahead for a possible PSOM event and create an emergency preparedness plan:

  • Sign up for outage alerts via MyAccount at nvenergy.com to ensure we have your correct contact information
  • Have an outage kit that includes a first aid kit, food, water, flashlights and batteries (per guidelines of ready.gov)
  • Have hard copies of emergency numbers
  • Know how to manually open your garage door
  • Understand how to safely operate any backup generation

Green Cross/Venerable Customers
If you or permanent members of your household is dependent on electrically operated medical equipment, we encourage you to enroll in our Green Cross program by calling Customer Service at (775) 834-4444. You’ll receive advance notification of any planned outage and we’ll work to restore power as quickly as possible during an unexpected outage.
