I choose to make Tahoe my home because it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world and it’s full of great people. Based on those two facts, I think there is a huge opportunity to see Tahoe become the outdoor capital of the world; a place with many more recreation opportunities, great businesses and community events.”

Chris McNamara, Founder of OutdoorGearLab, SuperTopo, TechGearLab and the American Safe Climbing Association, is the latest honoree of our 40 under 40. Chris is an exceptional young entrepreneur who has turned his love for the outdoors into a flourishing career. Congratulations Chris!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

I’m the founder of OutdoorGearLab, SuperTopo, TechGearLab and the American Safe Climbing Association. I’ve also started a speaker series with Corey Rich, Photographer, and Director at Novus Select, called Ski Run Presents, which brings world-class artists and athletes to South Lake Tahoe. I’m also working with Friends of Ski Run and the Ski Run Revitalization group to realize the full potential of both our street (Ski Run Blvd.) and the community of the South Shore.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

My favorite professional moment of the last year was completing the 1111 Ski Run Building with Corey Rich and seeing how many great people now work there. I can’t wait for more community events to take place at the new building, and in general seeing more energy on the street of Ski Run Blvd.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you try to live by?

Surround yourself with great people. In particular, find great mentors as early as possible.

What was your first job?

My first job was putting chalk on the little league fields, then I would go behind home plate and run the snack shack. I also would umpire on my days off.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

I choose to make Tahoe my home because it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world and it’s full of great people. Based on those two facts, I think there is a huge opportunity to see Tahoe become the outdoor capital of the world; a place with many more recreation opportunities, great businesses and community events.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

The first group I really connected with was the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA). They have done so much and really bring the community together. I also feel we’re in a special moment where the Forest Service is full of great leadership and there is a huge opportunity to create great trails.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I’m a big fan of commuting on single-track to and from work. In addition, I’m constantly looking for opportunities to find new trail connections that make our trail network more complete. I also love putting up new climbing routes, especially moderate ones that families and beginners can enjoy. Tahoe may not have Yosemite’s 3000-foot walls, but we actually have MUCH better moderate climbing. There is nothing better than putting up a new route and then hearing about meaningful experiences that people have climbing it.

Where is your favorite South Shore stomping ground?

Exploring off the beaten track for new climbs, views and unmapped trails. The Strava Heatmap has been invaluable for that. Tourists get caught going to the same spots. But locals have no excuses. 95% of the trails are empty most of the times. And roughly 100% of them are empty before 7 a.m., which is my favorite time.
