40 Under 40: Jeff Kaplan

  Tahoe Chamber  |   May 26, 2021   |   40 Under 40

“Professionally speaking, [to] have a strong sense of ownership of everything I create, do, or take responsibility for. Outside of work, to never forget my values, and always follow my moral compass.”

Jeff is the co-owner of Tahoe Bagel and quickly becoming an advocate for community relationships and business.

Congratulations to this week’s 40 under 40 honoree, Jeff Kaplan!

Can you tell us a little about your responsibilities and accomplishments in your current position?

My responsibilities at Tahoe Bagel are really a little bit of everything. I oversee all front-of-house operations which include staffing, the coffee/beverage program, POS maintenance, staff scheduling, customer satisfaction, sales, and more. Though, on any given day, you could see me baking, cleaning, and everything in between.

What has been your favorite professional moment in the last year?

This one is easy. My favorite professional moment was the Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting in which my parents flew out from the east coast to be a part of.

Do you have a professional/life mantra that you try to live by?

I don’t know if I would describe it as a “mantra” but professionally speaking, to have a strong sense of ownership of everything I create, do, or take responsibility for. Outside of work, to never forget my values, and always follow my moral compass.

Who is your role model?

My family. My father is a successful entrepreneur who, without trying, showed me what it takes to own a business while raising a family and genuinely care for both his family and employees. My Mother who left a successful career to raise a family, to immerse herself in her children’s development which still happens to this day…and also gave me my ridiculously high standards for food. My older brother and business partner, who introduced me to the restaurant industry when I was in high school and showed me how to lead. And finally my older sister, who really helped raise me, and show me what it takes first hand to sacrifice everything for family.

Why choose Tahoe to make your home and career?

The quick answer is quality of life. This also adds to my last answer because my brother Justin moved to North Lake when I was finishing college, so I was able to visit him. After I found myself unhappy with the East Coast, and constantly planning trips out west, I decided to leave everything I knew when I was 25 for Tahoe.

Are you active in any volunteer roles or community groups?

Unfortunately, I don’t have time for volunteering as of yet. We do make a lot of donations to local Tahoe organizations and funds. Some include TAMBA, local scholarships, Sugar Pine Foundation, and Bread & Broth to name a few.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

Depends on the time of year. I love to ski, snowmobile, mountain bike, golf, and get out on the lake as much as possible.

Where are your favorite South Shore stomping grounds?

If I’m playing outdoors, I love our ski resorts, golf courses, and trails. If I’m out in town, I’ve been known to hang out at Riva Grill’s bar (shout out to the Riva Fam!), Macduff’s, and The Turn.
