40 under 40: Blue Balcita, Lake Tahoe Community College
Blue Balcita is a reporter, columnist, blogger, and editor at most media outlets in the South Shore. After founding the first student newspaper at Lake Tahoe Community College last fall, she began to also write guest columns for other local papers on a variety of social issues such as domestic violence, food insecurity, and incarceration. When she is not writing, Blue is supporting charities, working on presentations to City Council, and creating inspiring films about local women
David wears many hats at his multi award winning company, while also being an advisor for Jellyswitch, Inc, a funded startup founded out of Cowork Tahoe which is building technology to provide the operating system for coworking spaces across the globe. After escaping an all encompassing work life in Silicon Valley, David Orr moved his family to the Tahoe Basin to find a better balance. As a co-founders and partner of Cowork Tahoe, he has helped to create an environment in which South Shore entrepreneurs can thrive.

Since falling in love with the Tahoe lifestyle 14 years ago, Meg Peart has found a home in many different roles around town. As the Grant Coordinator and Human Resources Manager for the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, Meg helps to implement grant funded environmental improvement projects around the Lake Tahoe Basin. In her free time, she volunteers for V-Day Tahoe, a global activist movement to end violence against women, and also serves on the board of the Tahoe Arts Project. Marilee takes her love for Lake Tahoe to work everyday as the Community Engagement Manager at the League to Save Lake Tahoe. She and her team are responsible for picking up 1,473 pounds of trash from last year’s Lake Tahoe’s shoreline during the Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue Beach Cleanup event. Between managing volunteer programs, organizing community events, and creating new solutions to Lake Tahoe’s litter issues, Marilee is also a devoted volunteer at SOS Outreach and V-Day South Lake Tahoe. Emily Abernathy originally came to the South Shore for a short escape after graduating college; however, she ended up finding her home in the mountains and becoming one of the hardest and most passionate workers in Lake Tahoe.
In her position of Head of Operations at the Tahoe Chamber, Emily juggles event planning, budget management, and overseeing all operations of the team. As an employee of the Tahoe Chamber for the last seven years, Emily is the backbone and creativity behind every one of the chamber’s signature events.
